AUVSI applauds the U.S. Department of Transportation’s decision to begin
moving toward enabling vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications
technology for light vehicles.
“This technology can help make our cars safer and more efficient,
building on the safety technology carmakers have already been
introducing,” said AUVSI President and CEO Michael Toscano. “Vehicles
equipped with this technology will be less likely to have accidents,
spend less time in traffic jams and burn less fuel.”
The cost of automobile crashes in the United States alone cost the
economy more than $230 billion a year and consume a greater share of
national healthcare costs than any other cause of illness or injury.
“By moving to implement V2V technology, the Department of Transportation
will save money and save lives, two great attributes of this type of
technology,” Toscano said.
Toscano also said that AUVSI has worked with the Department of
Transportation for a number of years and will continue to do so.
Currently, AUVSI has partnered with the Transportation Research Board
(TRB) to host the Automated Vehicles Symposium 2014, to be held 15-17
July, at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport. With a combination of
engaging plenary sessions and interactive workshops, the symposium will
provide a wealth of information for the automated vehicles community.
