CyPhy Works, based in Danvers, Massachusetts, has been awarded an Air Force contract to design and test its Extreme Access Pocket Flyer, a small tethered unmanned air system used for inspecting small passageways in search-and-rescue operations.

The aircraft will be about seven inches long and wide, a few inches thick, have a panoramic camera and be able to search areas with limited access that traditional ground robots cannot. The Pocket Flyer will also come equipped with CyPhy’s proprietary microfilament tether that allows use unfettered by power restrictions and with a constant live high-definition video feed.

“Improvised explosive devices, frequently placed in tunnels and culverts, are the predominant threat to our military forces,” says CyPhy Works Vice President of Government Systems Matt England. “Imagine not having to get out of the protection of your armored vehicle and being able to closely inspect suspicious areas in a fraction of the time it currently takes.”

Target users for the UAS include pararescue, Special Forces and FEMA. Helen Greiner, CEO of CyPhy and cofounder of iRobot, says, “The market potential is one for every soldier, Marine, police officer, SWAT team member and many other jobs that expose people to danger.”
