Autonomous Delivery Bots Expected to be in Washington D.C. Before End of Year
Autonomous delivery bots are expected to hit the streets of the Nation’s Capital before the end of the year, as Starship Technologies plans to release their bots in Washington D.C. within the next four to six weeks, according to PC World.
The bots, known as personal delivery devices are expected to make deliveries in a one to three-mile radius within 15 to 30 minutes. Customers will be able to order the bots using an app, and choose where they want their goods delivered, all for the low cost of just $1.
While this is a major step for Starship Technologies, as D.C. became the first U.S. city to approve the pilot program, its bots will have to follow several guidelines put in place by the D.C. Council. The bots are required to travel less than 10 miles per hour, must weight less than 50 pounds without cargo, and must obey all traffic and pedestrian rules and regulations.
In other places across the world using the bots, they are accompanied by an operator and walking escort, but Starship Technologies wants their bots to eventually be 99 percent autonomous.
