After two years of testing and more than 70 deployments to search for missing persons, monitor traffic and control crowds, Belgium Police MidLim announced that it will use a new Altura Zenith unmanned aerial system from Aerialtronics.

“We can use it for detective work, maintaining public order, aerial photographs and searching for missing persons,” says Police Chief Frank Mulleners.

The UAS has a livestream video connection and thermal camera that is valuable in detecting a human presence in search and rescue operations with low visibility.

Police Chief Mulleners lauds the time and cost savings associated with using the UAS.

“We can act very quickly and do not have to wait for a helicopter to begin out work and the purchase price is not comparable with that of a helicopter,” he says.

According to an Aerialtronics press release, the Altura Zenith is also being tested by the fire service in The Netherlands and for search and rescue operations in Norway. T-Mobile also uses the system to inspect its cell towers in Europe.
