FAA Selects K-State Saline to Test UAS Certification Standards

By Ben Gielow

In a press release dated 7 Oct., Kansas State University Salina announced it signed a memorandum of agreement with the FAA to validate industry standards for small UAS, set by the ASTM F-38 standards committee.

K-State will use its own UAS to test the standards created by F-38, which have been under development for years and will likely be used by the FAA when it releases the rulemaking for small UAS (an effort which has been long-stalled).

The tests will determine where the standards need further development and refinement, or where they might be overly restrictive.
