Below are step-by-step instructions for requesting N numbers from the FAA courtesy of Benjamin Miller, UAS program director for the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.

1. Decide upon an N number or numbers using these criteria to organize them:

One to five numbers (N12345)

One to four numbers followed by one letter (N1234Z)

One to three numbers followed by two letters (N123AZ).

2. Follow this link to the FAA’s aircraft registry page.

3. Select "Special N numbers, Changing N numbers."

4. In the middle of that page, click on "online reservation request program.”

5. Select up to five specific N numbers in order of preference to receive one of them or request a certain number of N numbers with the final two digits of your choice, allowing the FAA to assign the first three digits themselves.

6. Fill out your personal information. Then select government unit for no fee or pay $10 for each requested number.

7. The FAA will reply in three week if they were able to reserve your numbers.

After hearing back from the FAA, you will still need to fill out the 8050-88 affidavit of ownership for each airframe and associate that application with the N number you reserved.
