Congresswoman Rodgers: "This Technology is Ready"

These days, Washington, D.C. politics are topsy-turvy, but Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA-05) proved yet again her support for automated driving technology, and AUVSI thanks her for being such a stalwart champion.

On Wednesday, Axios hosted a virtual conversation titled “Driving Towards an Autonomous Future,” and the congresswoman held court on the importance of automated vehicles. She clearly stated that “this technology is ready,” and we couldn’t agree more. However, it is important to emphasize that even in the absence of federal legislation around automated driving systems, American companies are already leading the way towards safe and widespread deployment and will continue to do so.

Joann Muller, the Axios transportation reporter, asked Congresswoman Rodgers about the likelihood of a federal autonomous vehicle framework, but we would like to point out that Rep. Rodgers’ own state of Washington has a law on the books outlining a specific testing regime for automated driving systems. They are not alone in this; multiple states have created testing and deployment programs for all types of automated vehicles, and that kind of policymaker leadership is expediting the safe deployment of the technology.

We applaud Rep. Rodgers for her dedication to the advancement of the automated vehicle industry and look forward to serving as a resource to her and her staff but want to impress upon readers that American companies are already in the lead and will maintain that position.
