IRobot will deliver its 110 FirstLook robots and accessories to the U.S. Navy under a $4 million contract, with deliveries due by February 2016.
The FirstLook is a five-pound, compact robot capable of persistent observation as well as providing immediate situational awareness. It can integrate numerous third-party sensors, including hazardous material sensors, thermal imagers, and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats, among others. It can also be outfitted with a small robotic arm.
“IRobot is pleased to provide these state-of-the-art robots to the U.S. Navy as they will help to address a wide variety of missions," says Tom Frost, senior vice president and general manager of iRobot's Defense and Security business unit. "FirstLook is light enough and rugged enough to be thrown through a window or down a flight of stairs, and its capabilities are expandable with the addition of different payloads.”
