RE2, which builds mobile manipulation systems, has received a $2.7 million contract from the Office of Naval Research to build an underwater version of its highly dexterous manipulation system robotic arm.
The underwater version of the arm will be used to allow explosive ordnance disposal personnel to neutralize explosives remotely.
“We thrive on complex engineering challenges and are excited to leverage our mobile manipulation expertise for the underwater systems market,” says Jorgen Pedersen, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh-based company.
The two-arm system will be installed onto unmanned underwater vehicles to allow operators to disable explosives in close quarters. RE2 is working with underwater systems experts, including Bluefin Robotics, the Pennsylvania State University Applied Research Lab, SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific and Hagen Schempf of Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute.
