Company to oversee first phase of construction of automated vehicle proving ground

After being awarded a $24 million contract, Angelo Iafrate Construction, which is a Michigan-based company that has experience in heavy civil and transportation construction, will oversee phase one of the construction of a connected and automated vehicle proving ground at Willow Run for the American Center for Mobility. The first phase of construction, which is expected to be complete and open for testing in December of this year, will include the building of a two-and-a-half-mile highway loop with on- and off-ramps and a 700’ curved tunnel. A garage for customers will also be constructed, and an operations center will be built out.

Driverless vehicles headed to Chula Vista, California for testing

The city of Chula Vista, California will join several locations across the United States as a “proving ground” to test autonomous vehicles, after the Chula Vista City Council approved the testing of these vehicles within city limits on June 13. Testing, which is expected to begin next year, will take place on the streets of Chula Vista, as well as on Interstate-15 (where driverless vehicles were tested 20 years ago), and State Route 125 in the South Bay. “Already, businesses are here that are involved in emerging technology,” says Bill Valle, Chula Vista City Engineer, via NBC San Diego.

Audi performs first autonomous vehicle demonstration in New York State

Representatives from Audi of America Inc. performed the first demonstration of an autonomous vehicle in the state of New York on June 13. Using Audi’s Highway Pilot technology, the vehicle, which was occupied by two trained engineers who monitored the system and made sure that everything transpired safely, drove autonomously for approximately 6.1 miles once reaching Interstate 90, after being guided there by a driver.

Jaguar Land Rover invests $25 million in Lyft for autonomous vehicle testing

Through its mobility services subsidiary InMotion, Jaguar Land Rover has invested $25 million in Lyft, which will result in InMotion developing and testing mobility services, including autonomous vehicles, with the ride-hailing service. As a part of the investment, Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles will also be provided to some Lyft drivers. “Personal mobility and smart transportation is evolving,” says Sebastian Peck, InMotion managing director, via CNBC. “This new collaborative venture will provide a real-world platform helping us develop our connected and autonomous services.”
