Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) developer Fetch Robotics has announced a Series C round of funding that resulted in $46 million. The funding will be used to help Fetch Robotics expand internationally, meet accelerating customer demand, and to facilitate ongoing research and development. “Customers have responded enthusiastically to our unique Cloud Robotics solution, and we’re responding by securing the funds we need to continue growing and enhancing our offerings,” says Melonee Wise, CEO of Fetch Robotics.

Sea Machine Robotics, MARAD to showcase how autonomous tech can increase safety of marine oil-spill response ops

Sea Machines Robotics and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) have entered into a cooperative agreement to showcase how Sea Machines’ autonomous technology can be used to increase the safety, response time and productivity of marine oil-spill response operations. On-water exercises will be conducted once Sea Machines equips a Marine Spill Response Corp. (MSRC)-owned MARCO skimming vessel—manufactured by Kvichak Marine Industries—with its SM300 autonomous-command system. Sea Machines will train MSRC personnel on how to operate the system.

Curiosity Lab at Peachtree Corners opens autonomous vehicle and smart city living laboratory

Curiosity Lab at Peachtree Corners has announced the grand opening of its 5G enabled autonomous vehicle and smart city living laboratory. A publicly funded, real-world living laboratory and testbed, Curiosity Lab features a one and a half mile autonomous vehicle test track within a 500 acre commercial office park. “Startups and mature companies around the world are interested in using the Lab’s test track to better understand how their technology operates in a suburban community with people working and living around them,” says Brian Johnson, city manager for Peachtree Corners.

Volkswagen investing $2.6 billion in Argo AI

Volkswagen AG is investing $2.6 billion in self-driving vehicle company Argo AI. Volkswagen will commit $1 billion in funding, and will also contribute its Autonomous Intelligent Driving (AID) company, which is valued at $1.6 billion. “Our agreement with Volkswagen positions us as a technology platform company, expands the potential geography for deployment and will further fuel our product development,” Argo AI explains in a company blog post. “In fact, we’re the first self-driving company with definitive deployment plans in both the United States and Europe.”

DroneDeploy has launched a single platform for all UAS operations. The new product release includes several features, including: Drone Operations Management; Workflow Integrations; Inspection with Manual Flight; Drone Academy and Earthworks. Involi, a provider of air traffic data for UAS, is partnering with AirMap to develop a pre-integrated UTM and Air Traffic Awareness platform for safe, efficient, and scalable UAS operations. By combining its low-altitude air traffic data service with AirMap’s drone traffic management platform, Involi says that the companies can facilitate safe, complex, and autonomous UAS applications such as drone delivery, large-scale agriculture support, surveying and mapping. “It was a natural progression for Involi and AirMap to formalize their ongoing technical integration,” says Involi CEO and co-founder Manu Lubrano.

Navy declares initial operational capability of MQ-8C Fire Scout

The U.S. Navy has declared initial operational capability of the MQ-8C Fire Scout unmanned helicopter, which clears the way for fleet operations and training. A sea-based, vertical lift UAS, the MQ-8C Fire Scout is designed to provide ground, air and sea forces with reconnaissance, situational awareness, and precision targeting support. “This milestone is a culmination of several years of hard work and dedication from our joint government and industry team,” says Capt. Eric Soderberg, Fire Scout program manager. “We are excited to get this enhanced capability out to the fleet.”

Connected Robotics developing robots to free restaurant staff to handle 'more humanistic' side of work

A company called Connected Robotics (CR) that develops specialized robot systems for cooking in restaurant kitchens has announced that it has raised $7.8 million during a Series A investment round. According to CR, the company combines “robot control know-how” collected from robot product development experience in manufacturing along with sensing and learning technology using deep learning, which helps make the robots in the kitchen intelligent. CR says that it wants to develop robot systems that handle the heavy lifting in the kitchen, so that restaurant staff can focus on the “more humanistic” side of work to provide a positive environment for those serving and customers alike.
