Aeronyde and Unifly to provide emergency responders with advanced UAS technology

Aeronyde and Unifly have announced a partnership to bring advanced UAS technology to emergency responders. The companies will create an “efficient self-flying system” for police and fire departments by integrating Unifly’s Unmanned Traffic Management services, along with Aeronyde’s system for Autonomous flight. “Whenever I visit a new city, I look up and see endless possibility,” says Edgar Munoz, CEO of Aeronyde.

Boeing and SparkCognition partner to deliver UTM technology

Boeing has announced that it is working with SparkCognition, an artificial intelligence (AI) technology company, to deliver UAS traffic management (UTM) technologies. The companies will use artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies to track UAS in flight, and allocate traffic corridors and routes to ensure safe, secure transportation. Through the collaboration, the companies will also provide a standardized programming interface to support commercial applications such as package delivery and industrial inspections. “Estimated by some analysts at $3 trillion, the urban aerial mobility opportunity will lead to the creation of the largest new market in our lifetimes,” says Amir Husain, founder and CEO of SparkCognition.

MartinUAV incorporating Persistent Systems' Wave Relay MANET technology into its V-BAT UAS

Persistent Systems has entered into a five-year partnership with MartinUAV that will result in MartinUAV incorporating Persistent’s Wave Relay Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) technology into its small vertical takeoff-and-land (VTOL) UAS known as V-BAT. “Persistent is proud to have been selected out of the many commercially available datalink solutions,” says Louis Sutherland, VP Business Development for Persistent Systems. “This agreement cements Persistent’s line of Wave Relay MANET products as the exclusive communications solution for MartinUAV’s unmanned products.”

ASV Global-led consortium develops 'long endurance, multi-vehicle, autonomous survey solution'

A consortium made up of ASV Global (ASV), Sonardyne International Ltd., the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and SeeByte has developed what it describes as a “long endurance, multi-vehicle, autonomous survey solution.” The entities worked together on the three-year ‘Autonomous Surface and Sub-surface Survey System’ collaborative project, with a goal of delivering an integrated system to perform “low cost, full water column marine surveys using multiple autonomous systems.” The project recently culminated with a two-week trial in Scotland’s Loch Ness.

Persistent Systems introduces Auto-Tracking Antenna System

Persistent Systems has introduced a new portable ground-to-air antenna called the Auto-Tracking Antenna System, which operates on the Wave Relay mobile ad hoc network (MANET). Considered a “complete, easy-to-assemble system,” the Auto-Tracking Antenna System is designed to incorporate aircraft into the MANET. “The Auto-Tracking Antenna System represents a major step towards achieving the vision of a truly networked battlefield,” says Herb Rubens, CEO of Persistent Systems.

Integrated fuel tank maximizes fuel load for MQ-25

In an effort to maximize fuel offload for the proposed MQ-25 unmanned aerial refueling aircraft for the U.S. Navy, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) has announced that it is using an integrated fuel tank structure. Using its knowledge of advanced composite aircraft structures, GA-ASI developed integrated fuel tanks in a “large-scale wing box test article and a full-scale wing skin pre-production validation article.” Last November, the wing box tested to failure via wing bending at GA-ASI’s structural test facility in Adelanto, California. In April, GA-ASI verified the production readiness of the co-cured wing and tail components, using both non-destructive and destructive inspections.

Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and DFS Aviation Services to collaborate on air traffic management-related activities

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and DFS Aviation Services have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on a variety of air traffic management (ATM)-related activities. DFS Aviation Services, which is the commercial subsidiary of the German air navigation service provider DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung, and CAAS will collaborate to further optimize safety management systems and benchmark performance indicators. The entities will also develop “future air traffic management concepts, solutions and technologies.”

Kratos' Unmanned Systems Division's Autonomous Impact Protection Vehicle approved to deploy on public roadways

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions’ Unmanned Systems Division (USD) has received confirmation that its Autonomous Impact Protection Vehicle (AIPV) has officially been approved for “autonomous operation on public roadways in the first of many planned states in the USA for roadway line painting operations.” This approval transitions the AIPV, also known as the Autonomous Truck Mounted Attenuator (ATMA), from the validation phase of deployment to “standard safety critical equipment ready for operational use with trained roadside construction crews.”

This Week in the Unmanned Systems and Robotics World Researchers at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) have developed Solar Soaring technology that gives UAS the ability to fly for more than 12 hours. Solar-Soaring, which is a “pair of endurance-enhancing technologies,” enables a UAS to fly longer without carrying extra weight in batteries, ultimately helping the warfighter. (United States Navy)
