Miami Satellite Chapter Kickoff

The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) is coming to South Florida, and we are having a party to celebrate! If you are into drones, robots, rovers, or other unmanned or autonomous systems, this is one event you will not want to miss. Come join members of AUVSI's Florida Peninsula Chapter as we formally dedicate the new Miami Satellite Chapter representing everything unmanned throughout all of South Florida, Latin America, the Caribbean, and beyond! We've picked the legendary 94th Aero Squadron next to Miami International Airport as the backdrop for this historic event, and we pay hommage to past and current aviation, as we chart a new course into the future.

North Carolina Governor signs new UAS bills into law

According to the Courier-Tribune, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has signed two bills regarding drone use in the state. One of the bills is a new law that is meant to make sure that UAS operations remain safe, while the other bill revises existing laws. The first bill, known as House Bill 128, prohibits UAS use near prisons, with near being defined as “a horizontal distance of 500 feet or a vertical distance of 250 feet.” The law will go into effect on December 1, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation will mark the boundaries using signs.

50 airports to provide Automated Airspace Authorization for UAS starting this fall

This fall, 50 airports will begin providing Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC), which will give UAS operators the ability to “apply for instant, digital approval to fly in U.S. controlled airspace using the same applications they use for flight planning and in-flight situational awareness.” Currently, FAA authorization is required for flights in controlled airspace, at certain times of day, or near sensitive locations. Authorization requests are subject to long waiting periods and labor-intensive manual approvals, which can add more time to, or entirely halt, the process of trying to fly UAS commercially.
